About Us
Bluebird House Guest House in North Liberty, Indiana is a lovely restored 1894 Victorian home. When we purchased the home in September of 1996, it had been condemned and was in danger of being razed. We both felt and saw that the home had a wonderful ambiance and too many beautiful architectural features to be destroyed. It was also an important part of our small town’s history.
The Home underwent a two year complete restoration and mechanical upgrade. New wiring, plumbing, heating, and cooling systems were installed. All the old plaster had to be removed and ceilings and walls drywalled. The original windows were saved and repaired. The trim, baseboards, and doors had to all be hand stripped of layers of old paint. Missing woodwork was replicated by Amish craftsman and the kitchen custom made on site, including an Amish craftsman butcher block counter. The floors were sanded and ultimately painted. The magic of Bluebird House started to form. Antique furniture, collected by us over many years, along with antiques specifically acquired for Bluebird house, were moved in. Christine Franey, a local artist and gardener, began to paint her murals throughout the house. Her little surprise visual treasures were carefully “tucked in” here and there for visitors to discover. Her art brought gardens, lady bugs, and bluebirds inside the Bluebird House. She designed, installed, and still maintains the actual gardens around the house. Her touch takes the house from simply lovely to whimsical and enchanting.
